To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what plans he has to introduce a licensing system to regulate DSS hostels. [42234]

Mr. Clappison

The Government have no plans to introduce a licensing system for such hostels in particular or for houses in multiple occupation in general. Our proposals are set out in the consultation paper "Improving Standards in Houses in Multiple Occupation" which was published on 13 July. Copies are in the Library. An announcement on how the Government intend to take this matter forward will be made shortly.
