To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many acute psychiatric beds are available(a) in total and (b) per head of population in each health authority area. [41409]

The information available centrally is shown in the table and provides the average daily number of available beds for short stay mental illness in 1993–94 and beds per 100,000 population by former English regional health authority.
