To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what are the total numbers of(a) prison officers, (b) senior officers, (c) principal officers and (d) prisoner custody officers, in the Prison Service; if he will list the number and percentage of each grade who are identified as of ethnic minority origin; and if he will make a statement.

Letter from Richard Tilt to Mr. George Howarth, dated 3 November 1995:
The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Question about the number of staff in the prison officer grades and equivalents in the Prison Service and the number of those who are of ethnic minority origin.
The information for 3 October 1995 is given in the following table.

On the same date there were 728 prisoner custody officers at contractually managed prisons, of whom 23 (3.16%) were from ethnic minorities.
