§ Mr. RedmondTo ask the Secretary of State for Social Security if he will list each Benefits Agency office in South Yorkshire indicating(a) the number of employees and (b) the number of claimants receiving benefit through these offices; and how many each office had paid out by way of (i) crisis loans and (ii) community care grants under the social fund in each of the last four years. [39443]
528WMathison, the chief executive of the Benefits Agency. He will write to the hon. Member with such information as is available.
Letter from Peter Mathison to Mr. Martin Redmond, dated 2 November 1995:
The Secretary of State for Social Security has asked me to reply to your recent Parliamentary Question about how many applications the Benefits Agency offices in the Doncaster and Mexborough area have received during the last 12 months in respect of chronic bronchitis and emphysema; of those how many have (a) been accepted on first application, (b) been refused, (c) gone to appeal and (d) been accepted following an appeal; and what were the figures for the previous 12 months.
Not all the information requested is available. This is because figures for the number of claims made for chronic bronchitis and emphysema, also known as PD D12, since the end of the initial twelve month take-on period have been collected separately and in a slightly different format. The take-on period lasted from September 1993 to October 1994.
It is also not possible to provide specific information about the number of appeals against decisions on PD D12 claims as these are not kept separate from other prescribed diseases.
The available information is shown in the enclosed tables. The information in the first three columns of Table 1 was collected at Area Directorate level. The information in columns four and five was collected at the Disability Benefit Centre (DBC) at Leeds. Table 1 covers the South Yorkshire and Humberside areas which include Doncaster and Mexborough.
From 3 October 1994, the number of claims for PD D12 has been recorded at District Office level. The offices at Doncaster East and Doncaster West form the Doncaster District. Mexborough, Rotherham, Goldthorpe and Wath-on-Dearne offices form the Rother and Dearne District. Table 2 shows the information for those two Districts.
I hope this reply is helpful.
§ Mr. Roger EvansThe administration of the social fund is a matter for Mr. Peter Mathison, the chief executive of the Benefits Agency. He will write to the hon. Member with such information as is available.
Letter from Peter Mathison to Mr. Martin Redmond, dated 2 November 1995:
The Secretary of State for Social Security has asked me to reply to your recent Parliamentary Question asking for a list of the Benefit Agency offices in South Yorkshire indicating (a) the number of employees and (b) the number of claimants receiving benefit through these offices; and how many each office had paid by way of (i) Crisis Loans and (ii) Community Care Grants under the Social Fund in each of the last four years.
With the formation of the Benefits Agency in April 1991, offices were grouped into Districts and figures for each branch office cannot be given separately. Annex A - C gives information for each District in South Yorkshire.
The latest available data for the number of employees in South Yorkshire is provided at Annex A at District level.
Annex B gives the latest available number of customers receiving benefits as at 30 September 1995 and the latest available figures for Income Support as at 31 August 1995. You should note that a customer may receive more than one of the benefits listed.
529WThe number of customers in each office that had been paid a Crisis Loan or a Community Care Grant during the last four years is not available. This is because information on the Social Fund is not kept by customer but by applications made to the Fund. Annex C provides details of the number of successful applications.
I hope you find this reply helpful.

Letter from Peter Mathison to Mr. Martin Redmond, dated 2 November 1995:
The Secretary of State for Social Security has asked me to reply to your recent Parliamentary Question concerning the postcodes covered by the Benefit Agency's districts and directorates in Doncaster and Mexborough.
The enclosed Appendix A lists the names and addresses of the offices in Doncaster and Mexborough and the postcodes they cover. This should, however, only be used as a general guide because local offices are not organised by postcode but on a geographical basis. In some instances postcode areas are covered by more than one District.
I hope you find this reply helpful.
