HC Deb 01 November 1995 vol 265 cc327-8W
Dr. David Clark

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is his Department's assessment of the Tornado F3 upgrade with EJ200 engines. [40851]

Mr. Arbuthnot

There is no current requirement to upgrade the Tornado F3 with EJ200 engines.

Dr. Clark

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if his Department has examined the interoperability of US F-16 aircraft with Britain's air-to-air refuelling systems. [40849]

Mr. Arbuthnot

My Department is currently evaluating a proposal to upgrade the Tornado F3's weapons systems. As a routine part of our evaluation process, we are examining the comparative costs of alternative options, including acquiring F-16 aircraft from the US. In assessing these alternatives we will take full account of all relevant factors, including the need for air-to-air refuelling.

Dr. Clark

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the maximum flying height of the Tornado F3. [40850]

Mr. Soames

The Tornado F3 is cleared to fly at a maximum height of 50,000 ft. In practice, however, the actual operating ceiling will be determined by a range of interrelated factors, including weapon and fuel load, environmental conditions, and others.
