Mr. Robert AinsworthTo ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what was the annual expenditure on social security benefits for people in employment for the latest available year broken down by(a) family credit, (b) income support, (c) housing benefit and (d) council tax benefit. [38612]
§ Mr. Roger EvansThe information is set out in the table.
Benefit expenditure on people in employment 1994 £ million Benefit Estimated annual expenditure Family Credit 1,480 Income Support 617 Housing Benefit 697 Council Tax Benefit 137 Notes:
1. The figures have been rounded to the nearest million pounds.
2. The expenditure figures for income support, housing and council tax benefits have been estimated by calculation from the number of cases in receipt of benefit and the weekly amount of benefit in payment at a point in time in May 1994. They may not therefore represent actual spending through the year.
3. For the purposes of the calculations referred to in note 2 above 'people in employment' have been defined as cases where either the benefit claimant and/or his/her partner have earnings from employment or self-employment.
4. It is possible for one person to receive more than one of the benefits listed above.
5. Figures for family credit refer to estimated expenditure in 1994–95.
