To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many scientists employed by Her Majesty's inspectorate of pollution are specialists in air pollution. [25690]

Under HMIP's integrated structure, work on air pollution is undertaken by staff working in multi-disciplinary teams where individuals address all aspects of the inspectorate's responsibilities for pollution regulation and control.

Since 1990, seven recruitment campaigns have been held to increase the number of inspectors in line with the progressive growth in HMIP's complement over this period.
