HC Deb 23 May 1995 vol 260 c503W
Sir Thomas Arnold

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what plans he has to alter the inflation target. [24876]

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The Government's aim is to keep underlying inflation in the range 1 to 4 per cent. and to bring it down into the lower half of this range by the end of the present Parliament. I have no plans to change the objective for that period.

Mr. Malcolm Bruce

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, whether it remains his policy to keep RPIX inflation below 2.5 per cent. at the end of the current Parliament. [24552]

Mr. Nelson

The Government's policy is to keep underlying inflation, as measured by the retail prices index excluding mortgage interest payments, in the range 1 to 4 per cent, and to bring it down to the lower half of the range by the end of the present Parliament.
