Dr. Howells

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many staff(a) in his Department and (b) in other Government Departments have specific duties relating to the Europol drugs unit. [25051]

Mr. Maclean

[holding answer 22 May 1995]: Within the National Criminal Intelligence Service two members of staff currently work full-time on liaison duties associated with the Europol drugs unit. Other members of NCIS, the Home Office and Customs and Excise undertake duties associated with the work of the unit as part of their wider responsibilities for national and international police and customs co-operation.

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the cost in 1994–95 of the United Kingdom's participation in the Europol drugs unit. [25052]

[holding answer 22 May 1995]: For the financial year 1994–95 the United Kingdom's contribution towards the running and staff costs of the Europol drugs unit in The Hague was £849,000. Some additional costs were incurred in the United Kingdom as a result of staff time spent on representational, liaison and other duties associated with the work of the unit.
