To ask the Secretary of State for Education how many qualified(a) mathematics and (b) English teachers there were in secondary schools in each year since 1979; and what proportion of the total of teachers of each subject they represent. [23982]

The information requested is available only for 1984, 1988 and 1992 from the secondary school staffing surveys. In those years the number of full-time teachers who were teaching mathematics and English in maintained secondary schools in England and who had post A-level qualifications in the subject were as follows:
