§ Mrs. RocheTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what percentage of the single regeneration budget since 1994 has gone into projects aimed at tackling crime. [22836]
Sir Paul Bersford[holding answer 10 May 1995]: The single regeneration budget encompasses 20 programmes from four Departments and tackling crime is a key objective of many of the funded projects. For example, city challenge partnerships, estate action schemes and task forces all tackle crime, or the causes of crime, as part of their regeneration strategies. Because the SRB takes an integrated approach to regeneration, it is not possible to sensibly apportion costs to individual scheme objectives, such as crime prevention, but the estimated total expenditure on SRB programmes in 1994–95 was £1.45 billions. It is expected that substantial funding will be directed to projects aimed at tackling crime through the SRB challenge fund.
The safer cities programme, which is directly aimed at reducing crime and the fear of crime, spent £2 million in 1994–95.
