To ask the Secretary of State for Health what was the amount spent per head of the population on NHS mental health care in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool and Newcastle in each year since 1991. [21916]

1. Figures for 1993–94 are provisional.

2. Figures are for services purchased by district health authorities and do not include expenditure by general practitioner fundholders.

3. Figures do not include expenditure on services for people with learning disabilities.

In addition, of course, local authorities in these cities would also incur expenditure as a result of their responsibilities for the care of mentally ill people.
