HC Deb 11 May 1995 vol 259 c550W
Mr. Alton

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will place in the Library a revised list of the criteria he uses for classifying land mines by type. [23067]

Mr. Freeman

The NATO standard definition of a mine isan explosive or material, normally encased, designed to destroy or damage ground vehicles, boats or aircraft, or designed to wound, kill or otherwise incapacitate personnel. It may he detonated by the action of its victim, by the passage of time, or by controlled means". There is no NATO standard definition of an anti-tank or anti-personnel land mine: my Department considers an anti-tank land mine to be one which is designed specifically to target tanks or other vehicles; and an anti-personnel land mine to be one designed specifically to target people.
