To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his Department's policy regarding the exchange rate with the deutschmark. [22237]

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The Government do not have a policy of targeting the exchange rate against the deutschmark or any other currency. The exchange rate is one of the factors that are considered in determining the appropriate stance of monetary policy.
