To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the current prison population; and what were the figures for each of the previous four years. [20711]

Responsibility for the subject of the question has been delegated to the Northern Ireland Prison Service under its chief executive, Mr. Alan Shannon. I have asked him to arrange for a reply to be given.

Current Population There are currently 1761 people in prison in Northern Ireland.

Population over previous four years.

  • 1991: 1788
  • 1992: 1810
  • 1993: 1934
  • 1994: 1921 [subject to validation]
The figures for previous years are the Average Daily Population as published in the Northern Ireland Prison Service Annual Report. I hope this information is helpful.
