To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his proposed level of funding for the mental illness specific grant in the financial year 1996–97; and if he will make a statement. [16816]

The level of the grant in 1996–97 will depend on estimates of the need for services, the adequacy of existing levels of service, the capacity of organisations to arrange services, possible sources of alternative funding and what can be afforded. Estimates for planning purposes will be provided to local authorities in the summer. Final figures will be announced later in the year.
