§ Mr. WorthingtonTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has made about the widespread arrests in Nigeria, with particular reference to General Obasanjo, and others who were working for a return to democratic rule. [15533]
§ Mr. Baldry[holding answer 23 March 1995]: We have urged the Nigerian Government to ensure that former President Obasanjo is subject to due process of law: and is either released or promptly charged. I understand that he remains under house arrest, and that others recently arrested remain in detention, including Shehu Yar'Adua, leading member of the National Constitutional Conference. The Commonwealth 664W Secretary-General and the European Union have also issued statements expressing concern, copies of which have been placed in the Libraries of the House.
