To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will list the mortality rates for asthma for each of the last five years, broken down by ethnic origin.

Data on asthma deaths by ethnic origin are not available centrally.

The mortality rates for asthma for the last five years for which data are available are shown in the table:

Data on newly diagnosed episodes of asthma are not available by ethnic origin or family health services authority. Aggregated data from returns submitted to the Birmingham research unit of the Royal College of General Practitioners are available in the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys annual reference volume, "Communicable Diseases—Series MB2", copies of which are available in the Library. The latest data published are for the year 1992.
