Mr. Simpson

To ask the Secretary of State for Education how much has been spent on publicity concerning teacher training in 1994–95 and in each year since 1979. [29910]

Mr. Squire

The teaching as a career—TASC—unit was established in 1987 with the objective to promote teaching as a career and provide information and advice on teaching and teacher training. The functions of the TASC unit were taken on by the Teacher Training Agency in October 1994. Total DFE expenditure on TASC, and expenditure on the information and promotional activities of the Teacher Training Agency, since April 1987 was as follows:

  1. 1987–88: £493,398
  2. 1988–89: £913,166
  3. 1989–90: £931,631
  4. 1990–91: £1,448,383
  5. 1991–92: £1,548,631
  6. 1992–93: £1,360,556
  7. 1993–94: £1,021,770
  8. 1994–95: £1,106,966

In addition, the Department, in conjunction with TASC, ran teacher recruitment advertising campaigns in 1990 and 1991. The expenditure on these campaigns was as follows:

  1. 1990–91: £2,199,900
  2. 1991–92: £2,383,700

Expenditure on publicity for teacher training before 1987 is not separately identifiable within the Department's total expenditure on publicity.

Mr. Simpson

To ask the Secretary of State for Education what percentage of people who completed teacher training courses found teaching jobs(a) within the first six months of qualifying, (b) within a year of qualifying and (c) within 18 months of qualifying in 1994–95 and in each year since 1979. [299131]

Mr. Squire

Information is not available in the precise form required but estimates made from teacher's service details show the following:

Of those successfully completing courses of initial teacher training leading to qualified teacher status in England and Wales in the calendar year 1984, 76 per cent. were known to be in teaching service as at 31 March 1985 and 76 per cent. in service as at 31 March 1986. Of those completing training in the calendar year 1991, 78 per cent. were known to be in service as at March 1992 and 77 per cent. in service as at March 1993.

Teaching service includes both full-time and part-time service in any school in England and Wales plus full-time and some part-time service in public sector further and higher education in England and Wales but excluding the old university sector.

This is the earliest and most recent data available. Information for the intervening years could be provided only at disproportionate cost.

Mr. Simpson

To ask the Secretary of State for Education how many people have embarked on teacher training courses in 1994–95 and in each year since 1979(a) nationally and (b) in Nottinghamshire. [29915]

Mr. Simpson

To ask the Secretary of State for Education what is the total budget for teacher training in 1994–95; and what it is for each year since 1979. [29911]

Mr. Squire

Allocations by the Higher Education Funding Council for England in respect of courses of initial teacher training were as follows:

Academic year Allocation £ million
1992–93 82.1
1993–94 107.3
1994–95 155.9

In addition, Department for Education allocations to schools running the school centred initial teacher training scheme totalled £1.3 million for 1993–94, and £4.8 million for 1994–95.

These do not include the costs of fees, met for most students by a mandatory award, or student support for those on courses of initial teacher training.

Funding of higher education was brought under one body for the first time in 1992. Information for earlier years is not available in the form requested.

These figures do not include expenditure on the in-service training of teachers.
