To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many representations(a) for and (b) against the Newbury bypass he has received since his announcement of delay to the latest commencement date.

Between 19 December 1994 and 21 June 1995 we received some 492 letters and 4,655 pre-printed postcards in favour of proceeding with the Newbury bypass. Most of these came from the Newbury area. We have also received four petitions in favour of the bypass containing a total of 12,700 signatures. During the same period, we have received some 398 letters and 59 pre-printed postcards opposing the bypass. The majority of these came from outside the area.
