To ask the President of the Board of Trade (1) what proportion of SMART awards in 1994 were given to Welsh individuals or firms; and if he will make a statement; [34941]

(2) what proportion of SPUR awards in 1994 were given to Welsh firms; and if he will make a statement. [34959]

In 1994 the number of SMART awards—stages 1 and 2—in Wales was 31, with a total value of £1.414 million. This was 10 per cent. of the national total. The number of SPUR awards in Wales was 13, with a total value of £1.331 million. This was 13 per cent. of the national total. From 1 April 1994, financial responsibility for SMART and SPUR in Wales has rested with my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.
