§ Mr. MorganTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) what representations he has received in relation to the designation of the Holyhead-Felixstowe railway route as a preferred Euro-route for(a) freight and (b) passenger purposes; what consultations he has had with the European Union Transport Commissioner concerning the practical implications of such a designation; and if he will make a statement; [35236]
1326W(2) if he will make a statement on the designation of international Euro-routes as they effect (a) the United Kingdom railway system in general and (b) the Holyhead-Felixstowe railway route. [35235]
§ Mr. Watts[holding answer 18 July 1995]: We have received a number of representations. The Holyhead-Felixstowe rail route has always featured on the draft trans-European rail network map. Its inclusion was supported by the UK Government. The Transport Council approved the draft map at its last meeting. At the Council, the UK also supported the addition of this route to the draft combined transport network map.
It is for Railtrack to decide whether to apply for funding for any such projects. The UK Government will consider carefully all applications before submitting its bid for network funding.
Investment projects on routes included in the TEN maps are eligible in principle for financial support from the TEN's budget.
