To ask the President of the Board of Trade which posts within his Department are currently filled by staff seconded from BNFL. [36298]

Mr. Eggar

There are currently two staff seconded from BNFL working in the Department. One is in environment and energy technologies division, and the other is in atomic energy division. Both are at grade 7 level.

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what is his status as a shadow director of BNFL; what powers this gives him; to whom he answers for the exercise of his responsibilities, and if the Companies Act 1985 section 741(2) applies to this role. [36202]

The appointment of the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry as a shadow director, within the meaning of section 741(2) of the Companies Act 1985, of British Nuclear Fuels plc has been notified to the Registrar of Companies. The appointment of itself confers no powers on him. In broad terms, my right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Trade answers in Parliament on matters directly relating to Government policy, in so far as BNFL is concerned while day to day affairs of the company are for the board of BNFL.
