§ Mr. Home RobertsonTo ask the Secretary of State for Defence on how many occasions oncoming traffic was stopped by Ministry of Defence police to facilitate the passage of the nuclear weapons convoy on the A1 road between Musselburgh and Morpeth on 10 July; what is his assessment of the rise of road traffic accidents on that section of single carriageway road; and if he will seek to avoid routing such conveys on that part of the A1 road during peak or holiday traffic periods in future. [34428]
§ Mr. SoamesIt is not our practice to discuss the details of particular military movements. However, as a matter of long-standing policy, the routing of individual nuclear weapon convoys is always agreed in advance with local civil police forces. Traffic management is undertaken as necessary by the Ministry of Defence police officers who form part of such a convoy. The incidence of road traffic accidents is a matter for my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Transport and for Scotland.
