§ Sir Peter Lloyd
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the cost in 1994–95 of servicing(a) the total public sector debt and (b) that part of the debt accumulated in that year.
§ Mr. Waldegrave
Excluding flows within the public sector, gross public sector debt interest payments in 1994–95 amounted to £22.5 billion. Central Government debt interest payments were £21.9 billion, of which it is estimated some £700 million represented gross interest on gilts issued during 1994–95. It is not possible to provide reliable estimates of debt service costs arising from other forms of debt issued in the year.
