§ Sir Paul BeresfordIn 1993–94, the Department of the Environment paid direct grants centrally to more than 400 voluntary sector organisations to the value of £28 million. In addition, indirect grant of some £2.5 billion was paid to voluntary organisations; this amount includes all grant-paid by the Department to the Housing Corporation for the support of housing associations. Voluntary sector organisations also benefitted from the task force initiative and the city challenge programme but the precise figures are unavailable.
