Mr. Ainger

To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) how many dentists were offering national health service treatment in September 1994;

(2) how many salaried dentists were employed by English family health service authorities in December 1992, 1993 and 1994.

Mr. Malone

[holding answer 23 January 1995]: At 30 September 1994, excluding salaried dentists, there were 15,084 principal general dental practitioners on the dental lists of family health services authorities. Additionally, although not on family health services authority lists, there were 801 assistants and vocational trainees working under the supervision of a principal.

The number of salaried dentists employed by English family health services authorities is shown in the table.
