The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your recent Questions about special secure units in prisons in England and Wales.There are three special secure units in prisons in England and Wales, at Full Sutton, Parkhurst and Whitemoor prisons.At present only the unit at Full Sutton is in use. On 10 January this year it held eight prisoners, all of whom are category A (exceptional escape risk).
