HC Deb 19 January 1995 vol 252 c616W
Mr. Nicholas Brown

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will rank, in order of the reductions of unemployment achieved, the initiatives taken by his Department in the Northern region.

Miss Widdecombe

The Government are reducing unemployment throughout the United Kingdom by following sound economic policies based on permanently low inflation, removing unnecessary regulations which obstruct job creation, and by active measures to help unemployed people. These policies have already helped reduce unemployment by more than 550,000 in the United Kingdom as a whole and by nearly 16,000 in the Northern region.
