To ask the President of the Board of Trade what role his Department has played in assisting inward investment by Taiwanese manufacturing companies in Northumberland.

My Department has provided regional selective assistance grants to the following projects:

  1. (i) £8.25 million to Europa Magnetics Corporation of Cramlington to create 550 new jobs manufacturing floppy disks;
  2. (ii) £250,000 to Synpac Chemicals Ltd. of Bedlington to create 57 jobs manufacturing chemicals; and
  3. (iii) £90,000 to Lite-On Ltd. of Ashington to create 85 jobs manufacturing customised power supply component; for electrical and electronic equipment.

In addition, my Department is working closely with the Northern Development Co., the local authorities, Northumberland training and enterprise council and others to provide a full aftercare service to all inward investors in the county, including those of Taiwanese origin.
