§ Mr. Gwilym JonesThe number of licensed red meat abattoirs in Wales was 79 in 1979, 70 in 1984, 66 in 1989 and 39 in 1994.
In 1994, all 39 abattoirs were licensed under the Fresh Meat (Hygiene and Inspection) Regulations 1992; 33 were operating under temporary derogations while upgrading their premises to comply in full with the structural regulations.
The Welsh Office does not hold figures on the total capacity of abattoirs.
