To ask the Secretary of State for transport how many deaths in road traffic accidents were caused by alcohol in each of the last five years; and what breakdown by age is available.

Mr. Norris

The estimated number of fatalities in alcohol related road traffic accidents in the last five years is as follows:

  • 1989 814
  • 1990 758
  • 1991 662
  • 1992 662
  • 1993 546 (provisional)

Information on the age of drivers and riders killed is given in table 11 of "Road Accidents Great Britain 1993", which is in the Library.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will give the cost to the NHS of treating injuries caused by road traffic accidents which in turn have been caused by alcohol.

The Department of Transport highways economics note No. 1—September 1994, which is in the Library, provides the average medical and ambulance costs of road accident casualties, separately for fatalities, serious and slight injuries.
