Mr. Matthew Taylor

To ask the President of the Board of Trade how much the nuclear levy currently adds to average household fuel bills.

Mr. Eggar

The fossil fuel levy is charged to licensed electricity suppliers, at the rate of 10 per cent. of the value, net of VAT, of leviable electricity supplied. The levy has made transparent the nuclear costs that it finances; but because these costs were already being met, electricity prices did not have to increase when the levy was introduced in 1990.
