To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what plans he has to introduce voluntary and compulsory severance arrangements for police officers.

Mr. Howard

The -Metropolitan police service is running a limited voluntary retirement scheme which will come to an end of 31 March 1995. This was introduced to assist the force to restructure its middle management.

All other Home Departments' forces expect to be able to carry out any such restructuring without voluntary or compulsory severance arrangements. The Government do not therefore intend to introduce legislative provision for such arrangements.
