§ Mr. RedwoodFigures for local authority staffing are compiled by the Local Government Management Board. These show that in June 1994, there were 117,000 local government employees in Wales serving a population of almost 3 million and costing £2 billion. Comparable figures for England were 1,677,000 employees for a population of 48.5 million at a cost of £32.4 billion; and for Scotland, 255,000 employees for a population of over 5 million at a cost of £4.6 billion.
