To ask the Secretary of State for Education how many four-year-olds are in receipt of nursery education; and what percentage of the total number of children in that age group that constitutes.

In January 1994, 48,000 four-year-olds, who were also aged four at the previous 31 August in England were being taught in maintained nursery schools and nursery classes in maintained primary schools, representing 11 per cent. of the relevant age group. The780W number of pupils who reached age four during the autumn term is not collected centrally.
