To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many NHS beds, overall and by region, have been closed since 1979; and how many NHS beds there are at present.

Information on bed closures is not available centrally. The latest information on the average number of available national health service beds is published in "Beds availability for England, Financial Year 1993–94", copies of which are available in the Library.
