HC Deb 01 February 1995 vol 253 c697W
Mr. Cohen

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland for what purposes other than those connected with the tax and benefits systems the national insurance number may be used; what plans he has to make the number more widely available for those purposes; if legislation is necessary; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Moss

I refer the hon. Member to the reply I gave him on 6 December 1994,Official Report, column 163. The national insurance number can be used only for national insurance, tax and social security benefit purposes and there are no plans at present to introduce legislation to extend its use.
