To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what is the average staff:student ratio in the United Kingdom university system(a) in the current year, and (b) in each of the past 15 years. [6551]

Information on the student:staff ratio in higher education institutions in England for the years 1990–91 to 1993–94 are as follows:

  • 1990–91: 13:4
  • 1991–92: 14:6
  • 1992–93: 15:6
  • 1993–94: 16:5
