asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many of the persons currently being held in prisons or detention centres under Immigration Act powers are asylum seekers and what are their nationalities.

As at 21 November 1995, the latest date for which information is available, a total of 776 persons who had at some stage sought asylum were detained. This figure includes people awaiting removal following refusal of their applications as well as those whose applications were under consideration or subject to appeal.

Information on the nationality of those detained as at 21 November 1995 is given in the table.
