To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what are his estimates of the planned and actual number of employees of his Department's police for each year from 1990–91 to 1998–99; and if he will make a statement. [6015]

The actual number of staff employed by the MOD police for the years in question, as at 1 August each year, was:

  • 1990: 4,766
  • 1991: 4,962
  • 1992: 5,163
  • 1993: 5,026
  • 1994: 4,908
  • 1995: 4,714.

The overall manpower requirements of the Ministry of Defence are kept under constant review, and we have recently issued for consultation proposals on our future defence police and guarding requirements.
