To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what is her Department's estimate of the cost of(a) teaching and (b) research assessment exercises to be conducted by the Higher Education Funding Council (England) in (i) 1995–96, (ii) 1996–97, (iii) 1997–98 and (iv) 1998–99. [4321]

The Higher Education Funding Council for England determines the conduct of these assessments and what proportion of its running costs should be spent on them. I am asking the chief executive to write to the hon. Member.
