HC Deb 04 December 1995 vol 268 c142W
Mr Berry

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what is her most recent estimate of the level of unemployment in Waveney; and if she will make a statement on the measures she proposes to take to reduce it. [3845]

Mr. Forth

On 12 October 1995, the latest date for which figures are available, the number of unemployed people in Waveney was 4,580.

The local offices of the Employment Service provide a wide range of programmes to assist jobseekers to find work. Norfolk and Waveney training and enterprise council provides a range of training programmes for adults and young people, including a programme specific to Waveney offering practical training in skills for the offshore industries. The TEC, in conjunction with the local authority, offers an incentive scheme for those who start up new businesses in the area. These opportunities, together with our overall policy aim of achieving sustainable low inflation growth, are the best way of achieving a reduction in unemployment.
