To ask the Secretary of State for Health what was the number of private pay beds in the NHS in each of the last five years. [3768]

This information has not been collected centrally since 1990–91 when there were 2,956 pay beds. Laing's "Review of Private Healthcare", copies of which are available in the Library, provides estimates for subsequent years.
