HC Deb 25 April 1995 vol 258 c479W
18. Mr. Merchant

To ask the Secretary of State for Education what assessments he has made of the comparative performance of grant-maintained schools and local education authority schools. [19186]

Mr. Robin Squire

On average, grant-maintained primary schools achieve better results at key stage 1 than LEA primary schools, and grant-maintained comprehensive schools achieve better GCSE results and higher attendance rates than their LEA counterparts. These comparisons remain true even when socio-economic differences in the schools' intakes are discounted.
