HC Deb 25 April 1995 vol 258 cc443-4W
Mr. Molyneaux

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) if he will give an assurance that persons wanted for questioning in connection with murders in the United Kingdom continue to be the subject of arrangements for extradition for the Irish Republic; [20013]

(2) if he will give an assurance that persons wanted for questioning in connection with murders in the United Kingdom continue to be the subject of arrangements for extradition from the Irish Republic. [20012]

Mr. Nicholas Baker

Extradition between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland takes place under the Backing of Warrants (Republic of Ireland) Act 1965 and the corresponding legislation of the Republic of Ireland. As with all extradition arrangements, the legislation makes no provision for extradition solely for the purposes of questioning, but makes provisions for the extradition of those who are either unlawfully at large having been convicted of a crime, or for whom an arrest warrant has been issued so that they may stand trial. It remains Her Majesty's Government's policy, wherever possible, to seek the return of those who have escaped from justice.
