HC Deb 25 April 1995 vol 258 cc521-2W
Mr. Gerrard

To ask the Parliamentary Secretary, Lord Chancellor's Department how many appeals in each of the past five years for which statistics are available against conviction for criminal offences in England and Wales have(a) been upheld, (b) been dismissed and (c) led to direction for a retrial; and, in the case of those appeals upheld, what information he has concerning the reasons for which the appeals were upheld. [19521]

Mr. John M. Taylor

The question concerns a specific operational matter on which the chief executive of the Court Service is best placed to provide an answer and I have accordingly asked the chief executive to reply direct.

Letter from M. D. Huebner to Mr. Neil Gerrard, dated 24 April 1995: The Parliamentary Secretary, Lord Chancellor's Department, has asked me to reply to your question about the number of appeals against convictions for the past five years.

The following table provides statistics on the number of appeals against conviction in the Crown Court since 1990 which have been granted, dismissed or which led to a re-trial:

1990 1991 1992 1993 1994
Granted 256 269 299 402 351
Dismissed 337 308 370 524 577
Re-trials 3 15 12 20 51

The reasons for which the appeals were granted are not available and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
