To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will make a statement on the progress of the Cardiff bay barrage. [18740]

Good progress has been made to meet the target my right hon. Friend has set the corporation of completing 54 per cent. of the construction of the barrage by 31 March 1996.

The current final cost forecast of the barrage project is £191 million. After allowing for £15.4 million for preliminary design work and the presentation of the Bills to Parliament and £5.7 million for bird compensation measures, this forecast is consistent with the costs indicated to Parliament in October 1992 converted to outturn prices.
