§ Mr. RedwoodAlthough information on the numbers of staff employed by general medical practitioners has been collected for a number of years, the number of practice managers was collected, as a separate category, for the first time at 1 April 1994 when there were 523—373 whole-time equivalent—in Wales. Information on fund managers has not yet been collected as a separate category.
General medical practitioners are self-employed contractors to the NHS and, as employers, are responsible for the salaries of their staff.
