To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the change in real take-home pay for families with one earner and two children since 1979 and between 1974 and 1979 in the Lancaster travel-to-work area. [18795]

Real take-home pay for a one-earner couple on male average earnings in Great Britain with two children has risen by around 40 per cent.—over £80 a week—since 1978–79. It rose by less than 1 per cent. between 1973–74 and 1978–79. No figures are available for the Lancaster travel-to-work area.

Real take-home pay for a single man at the lowest decile of male earnings in Great Britain has risen by nearly a quarter since 1978–79. It fell slightly between 1973–74 and 1978–79. No figures are available on a regional or sub-regional basis.
